Eskom Transmission
  • Transmission Quality of Supply. Hosting and maintaining system hardware and database for Quality of Supply to Transmission.
  • MV-90 xi. MV-90 is an Automated Remote Meter Reading Data Acquisition package that provides the facilities to retrieve metered data from electricity and gas meters. MV-90 is a multi-vendor data retrieval system that supports multiple products from multiple vendors and is compatible with most electronic meters world-wide. MV-90 is an off-the-shelf package provided by a company called Itron and provides all the functionality for the retrieval, management, reporting, validation/estimation/editing (VEE) and data exporting required by Eskom to provide interval billing data to the Eskom billing systems. MV-90 provides the core mechanism for the retrieval of meter readings within Eskom for both Transmission and Distribution. Over 80% of the distribution revenue is based on metering data retrieved via MV-90 and it is considered as one of the critical systems within Eskom. MV-90 is the source of data that is uploaded to the Enerweb applications CC&B Upload, LTODS and Distribution Settlements.
  • Intelligent Electronic Device Gateway. In order to provide the Transmission System Operator with the required information for decision-making on the national grid, it is required to connect to the event recorder distributed nationally in the field, and collects the required information. This project provides a selected group of users controlled access to these devices via the IED Gateway and the Eskom Telecommunications’ X25 network.
  • Metering Data Management System. The Meter Data Management System (MDMS) collects, disseminates and stores meter profile data. It provides the customer with a view of their customer’s configurations and interval data. The MDMS also implements business rules and provides data quality reporting and management, process scheduling and mapping management capabilities.

  • Business Event Notifier. Business Event Notifier (BEN) is an automated real-time notification system with advanced filtering, routing and reporting features. An SMS or e-mail can automatically be sent by the system to registered role-players to notify them of status changes in for example an electrical network (i.e. by monitoring SCADA logs). Role-players typically include technicians, customers, customer executives or control room operators. The relevant people are notified immediately (i.e. network failure) and corrective steps can be taken promptly. This means that BEN can assist in bringing operational efficiency, improved customer relationships and monetary savings to the organisation.

  • MV-90 xi. Refer to the description under 'Eskom Transmission'.
  • HomeFlex Proof of Concept. The scope of work for the Homeflex Proof of Concept (PoC) project was to prove it is feasible to remotely control a customer's electrical usage by utilising the advances made with Automated Meters. Through the use of this technology, predetermined schedules can be transmitted to a meter to manage the energy usage of a household, and in so doing directly impact the energy requirements associated to these markets. Being able to reduce the load requirements over peak times by controlling high energy consuming appliances such as geysers, or controlling their energy demands at will over special or critical periods, is the ultimate aim for the future of the project.
Eskom KSACS
  • Demand Market Participation. Providing a system for Eskom customers to participate in the Eskom Power Pool (EPP). It gives the Eskom customer the opportunity to bid any flexible demand onto the EPP, resulting in the Eskom customer being scheduled for participation standby during specific hours of a day. The customer's flexible demand is then dispatched as and when required by the Eskom System Operator.
  • Sales & Purchase Organisational Tool. Sales & Purchase Organisational Tool (SPOT) is a web based tool whereby data is uploaded to a warehouse for KSACS and Transmission customers. The data is loaded 3 times a day from MV-90 so that an up-to-date complete set of data is kept for KSACS customers. Data is sent to Transmission on a monthly basis so that they can settle finances between Distribution and KSACS. There is also a Microsoft® Excel add-in tool that is installed on clients’ desktops so that they can access KSACS data in a spreadsheet to their own specifications.
  • Demand Generation Participation. Demand Generation Participation provides a system for Eskom customers to participate in the Eskom Power Pool (EPP). It gives the Eskom customer with substantial generation capacity of its own the opportunity to bid any flexible generation capacity onto the EPP. The customer's flexible generation capacity is then scheduled for participation during certain hours of specific days over a period of one week.
